Dumont Councilwoman Resigns, Has 'No More Energy For Disagreements'

Dumont Councilwoman Barbara Correa resigned citing personal and health reasons Tuesday.

"When I started I really, really hoped I could help Dumont. I tried my hardest and I like to think I always gave 200 percent," she said in an open letter to the community.

"I haven't always been right, but I've always been honest."

Correa's 3-year term expires at the end of 2019. She served on the Board of Education for nearly two decades before being elected to council.

Correa said that her health issues have drained her of her energy to continue disagreeing with people, particularly in arguments.

"As some of you may notice, there's a growing trend in Dumont to limit residents participation," she said, "to try to hide anything that makes us look bad and to control what's being said at meetings.

"Hopefully the council fills my position with an honest, hard-working resident who listens to the public. And then acts that way. No matter who gets upset. Someone who speaks their mind out loud at meetings - not behind closed doors."

Correa urged residents to get involved in town government and to continue coming to meetings.

"I know how easy it is to feel like you can't make a difference - but keep at it," she said before thanking the community for the experience, and wishing Dumont well.
