Shot fired in Teaneck home invasion, reward offered

Fragments from an airgun slightly wounded one of two young men as they struggled with a pair of bandits who broke into their Churchill Road home in Teaneck in the middle of the night and fled in a dark SUV, police told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Teaneck police have recovered the gun and are looking for the robbers, who they said took off in what possibly was a Honda Ridgeline or Chevy Avalanche. Both were described as black and in their early 20s, one short and stocky, the other tall.

The two victims, ages 20 and 22, met responding officers on the street outside their house after one called police on his cellphone, said Teaneck Detective Capt. Dean B. Kazinci. They told police they went downstairs shortly after midnight Saturday after hearing noises coming from the basement, Kazinci said.

The men “were confronted on the first floor of the house by two individuals who threatened to kill them,” the captain said. The pair struggled with the robbers before one “pulled out a weapon and fired it in the direction of the 20-year-old,” he said.

The victim declined medical treatment for minor cuts and scratches on his nose and lip, Kazinci said.

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Department is examining the gun, the captain said.

Kazinci said the owners aren’t sure yet whether anything was taken. Detectives have yet to say why they were targeted.

Teaneck Crimestoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 dollars for any information that leads to the identity and arrest of the robbers. Call: 201-833-4222.

Meanwhile, Teaneck police ask anyone who “observed suspicious activity or a vehicle fitting this description” to call detectives at 201-837-2565.
