The Churchill Road resident told police he had a friend from town over when they both heard noises coming from the basement. When they went to check, he said, they were confronted by two men.

As they fought, one of the intruders fired a pellet gun, with fragments hitting one of the victims. The pair then fled in a dark SUV.

The “Air Soft” pellet gun was left behind, but police made a more interesting find — an unspent .22-caliber bullet, “which leads us to believe there was another handgun in play during the home invasion,” said Detective Capt. Dean B. Kazinci.

The intruders had come looking for something in one of two second-floor bedrooms, Kazinci said. He wouldn’t say whether that was cash or drugs or both.

However, the Narcotics Unit of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and drug-detecting dogs were both summoned to the scene, although with the evidence-gathering officers from the county sheriff’s department.

Kazinci’s detectives are waiting to interview three other people who live in the house. They’ve been out of state, he said.

The two victims, ages 20 and 22, met responding officers on the street outside their house after one called police on his cellphone following the incident shortly after midnight Saturday, the captain said.
