"I am deeply touched, humbled and blessed to receive this tribute," said March, who coached the high school girls from 1981 to 1991 and the boys team from 1992 to 2010.
The ceremony took place between the girls and boys teams' games against Bergenfield, uniting the two squads.
March went 220-68 as the Highwaywomen's coach and 394-91 with the boys. Teaneck Board of Education President Dr. Ardie Walser said his impact went much further than wins and losses.
"Our coach here, Curtis March, has had an extraordinary life," Walser said. "What we don't see are the many lives he has touched during his years of coaching."
March won two county, three league, and a state sectional title with the girls. He secured four county, 11 league, three state sectionals, and four group championships with the boys.
He also was named coach of the year on numerous occasions.
Current girls coach Shenee Clarke said she talked about everything with March. Clarke said March told her she reminded him of himself at a younger age.
"At first I remember not knowing what you were talking about," Clarke said. "But after hearing all the stories of when you coached back in the day I completely understand the intensity, the passion, the IQ you have for the game."
