Appearing in the state Tournament of Champions for the first time since 2003, the Group 3 champion Highwaymen defeated Group 2 champion West Side, 71-62, in the first round of the TOC on Tuesday night at Pine Belt Arena in Toms River.

Fourth-seeded Teaneck (28-4) will meet top-seeded and undefeated St. Anthony (30-0) in Thursday’s Tournament of Champions semifinals also at the arena. The Highwaymen are only the seventh team in Bergen County history to reach the TOC.

A balanced scoring attack was led by sophomore Ja’Quaye James, who dropped a team-high 17 points, while junior Jawaun Daniels and senior Nicholas Whitaker each added 15. Junior Adrian Baucom recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
