TEANECK, N.J. -- Fairleigh Dickinson University is kicking off the fall semester with 11 new laboratories and academic spaces for students to utilize in Becton Hall on the Teaneck side of the campus.

"We are putting a lot of emphasis on STEM-type programs, since we have a strong engineering program on campus," said Public Relations Director Dina Schipper.

"We would like to expand and keep moving forward with state-of-the-art labs to support the programs we envisioned," she said of the 2014-2019 strategic plan.

The bulk of the construction was done over the summer and is expected to be completed sometime in the fall.

  • a soils lab;
  • an advanced manufacturing lab;
  • a materials testing lab;
  • a fluids and HVAC lab;
  • a machine and wood shop;
  • a mechanical training lab;
  • an electrical wiring lab;
  • a 3-D printing lab;
  • an electronics lab;
  • a green energy lab;
  • a digital arts studio.

Much of the funding for the Becton Hall work comes from New Jersey state bonds issued to support academic spaces that prioritize STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) facilities.

More is planned.

"From academic programs to facilities to growing student population-- these are all part of the plan," Schipper said. "The biggest plan and biggest hope is a new student center, which is not in the pipeline yet. And we are bringing a new president aboard for the next academic year."
