TEANECK, N.J. — Voters trickled into Benjamin Franklin Middle School Tuesday morning to cast their ballot in the Teaneck Township Council election.

By 10:30 a.m., Board of Elections Volunteer Zane Halkowycz said only 117 of District Nine's 1,100 voters had cast ballots.

"Usually this is a very well-disciplined district," said Halkowycz, who has lived in Teaneck for 47 years. "But I don't think we will get more than 600 votes here this time around."

Seven candidates are running to fill three seats on the Township Council.

Incumbents Mark Schwartz, Mohammed Hameeduddin and Henry Pruitt are running on the "Moving Teaneck Forward" platform, promising to keep taxes at a minimum.

They are being challenged by:

Bergen County Public Information Officer Michael Pagan, who has lived in Teaneck since 1986.

Stephen Gruber, an actuary and first-time candidate who runs the watchdog website "Teaneck: End The Madness."

Chondra Young, a tax preparer who serves as co-president of the Teaneck Council of Parents and Teachers.

Jacob Herenstein, a 22-year-old accounting student at Yeshiva University in New York City.
