THC or treat? Halloween tips include watching out for pot candy

PUBLIC SAFETY: Time for some basic trick-or-treating tips for parents this Halloween:

Reflective costumes or clothing for your youngsters, along with a flashlight or glow stick, are smart;

Remind them to use crosswalks, be careful on or near roadways and not run — an uneven sidewalk can do serious damage;

Inspect candy, of course — toss out anything that’s unwrapped or looks like it’s already been opened — but also keep in mind that some states (not New Jersey) legally sell marijuana candy.

Although some may think it’s clever, the THC-infused “treats” include Pot-Tarts and Snicker Bars — which come in wrappers similar to their original namesakes.

That’s not to say it’s a widespread threat: The cost alone make it prohibitive for would-be pranksters.

And if the packaging wasn’t enough to tell you what’s inside, you can always smell it: Cannabis candy tends to be skunky.

“There is no data to suggest that this is a significant threat here in New Jersey,” State Police emphasize, “but it’s always good to err on the side of caution.”
