TEANECK, N.J. -- A Teaneck police sergeant chased down an accused accused strong-arm robber who fled a short time earlier Monday from the Century 21 store in Paramus.
Robert Dickerson, 37, shoved a security guard who tried to stop him for shoplifting from the Bergen Town Center store, "elevating it to a strong-arm robbery," Teaneck Sgt. Jack Garland told Daily Voice.
Security officers immediately gave Paramus police a description of Dickerson and the black getaway car he jumped into around 3:20 p.m.
Hearing the subsequent State Police Emergency Network call, Garland said he headed to Teaneck Road and Route 4.
He spotted the Audi soon after, got behind it and waited for backup before activating his lights and siren.
"The car slowly pulled over the shoulder, came to a stop, and the rear passenger bailed out," Garland told Daily Voice.
While backups tended to three other occupants, Garland chased Dickerson into Englewood.
"He jumped a guard rail, ran down an embankment jumped over a creek into a wooded area and was running south when I caught up to him at the Windsor Condos," the sergeant said.
The other three were released without charges.
Dickerson, meanwhile, was being processed at Teaneck police headquarters.
