Teaneck Registered Sex Offender Charged With Assaulting 5 Children

TEANECK, N.J. -- A registered sex offender from Teaneck abused five different children from three to nine years old -- and even videotaped some of them in the act -- over the course of nearly 2½ years, a sweeping indictment returned by a grand jury in Bergen County alleges.

William Romero Kooney, a 42-year-old software engineer, has remained free since posting $900,000 bail on March 23, more than two weeks after his arrest.

Kooney was registered in 2009 as a Megan’s Law offender for sexually assaulting a Passaic County girl under 13 and possessing child pornography.

After he was arrested again on March 7, a Teaneck boy's father contacted authorities and new charges were added, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said at the time.

The 31-count indictment charges Kooney with fondling the boy's penis and buttocks over the course of a year, beginning when he was 8.

Overall, it alleges, the crimes occurred in Teaneck and Prospect Park from Sept. 1, 2013 through Feb. 27, 2015.

Except for the boy, all of the young victims were forced into fellatio on Kooney, the indictment charges.

One girl was sexually assaulted from when she was 3 until she was 5, it says, adding that she her vagina and buttocks touched.

A 5-year-old boy was intimidated into not telling authorities what happened, the indictment charges. He was also shown pornographic videos, it says.

Some of the children themselves were recorded "in a prohibited sexual act or in the simulation of such act," the indictment says.

Kooney trafficked the videos online, it says.
