Teaneck officials to explain new public safety director’s post to public

Teaneck’s township manager plans to meet with residents tomorrow night to discuss the recent merger of the municipal police and fire departments under the stewardship of retired Chief Robert Wilson, now working for the town as a civilian.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at the Municipal Building, 818 Teaneck Road.

The merger caused an uproar within the Teaneck PBA, which brought in some heavy firepower, the state Association of Chiefs of Police. The association said the move keeps eligible civil servants from ever becoming chief, gives control of police and fire operations to town officials instead of the professionals and severely reduces safety.

A council majority that approved the move, 4-3, last week says Teaneck will save a considerable amount of money with fewer administrators. Councilman Elie Katz also said he expects a reduction in the number of department heads based on questionable decisions.
