NYC playwright, St. John’s professor blames ‘senior moment’ for lying to police about laptop thefts

EXCLUSIVE REPORT (ONLY ON CVP): An off-Broadway playwright and St. John’s University professor told CLIFFVIEW PILOT that he concocted the story he told police about having two laptops stolen from him at the Port Authority bus terminal in Manhattan.

“A senior moment, stupidity, time to retire — all of the above,” Larry Myers said were responsible for his behavior.

Surveillance video showed that Myers wasn’t carrying a shoulder bag when he walked into the terminal from 42nd Street on Monday, as he’d originally told Port Authority police.

The 65-year-old playwright, director and professor repeated the story after being asked to return on Tuesday and was charged, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said.

“When confronted with evidence that no theft had indeed occurred, he indicated that he ‘may have imagined’ the whole thing,” Pentangelo said.

A Sept. 30 hearing was scheduled.

Myers, who lives on Commerce Street in Greenwich Village, told CLIFFVIEW PILOT that he may have had his mind on a play he’s writing about Pope Francis, Uganda and false imprisonment.

He said he was out and about because he doesn’t have air conditioning, which “makes me feel weird.”

Myers has written and directed plays performed in Manhattan, San Francisco, Louisville, Anchorage and Edinburgh, among other locations. His work is frequently produced off Broadway in New York City. Topics have included AIDS, cancer, alcoholism and teen-age suicide.

Myers teaches speech and playwrighting at St. John’s Manhattan campus in Tribeca.

“I was shocked that I’m important enough that anyone would care to write about me,” he told CLIFFVIEW PILOT . “I’m sure St. John’s isn’t going to be pleased about this.”
