SHOUT OUTS: Teaneck Police Chief Robert A. Carney officially shed the “acting” title during a promotional ceremony during last night’s Township Council meeting.
Carney was appointed acting chief after Robert Wilson retired in March.
He began his service in Teaneck as a patrol officer in 1988. Four years later, he was promoted to burglary investigator.
He moved to the Community Policing Bureau in 1994 and was promoted to sergeant a year later.
Carney joined the Traffic Bureau in 2000, and became lieutenant three years later. He was promoted to captain in 2010 and to deputy chief a year later.
The new chief, who had his badge pinned last night by his predecessor, prepared and read a statement:
“I would like to thank Manager Broughton and the Council for the opportunity to lead one of the finest police departments in the State.
“I’d like to thank Chief Wilson for giving me the opportunity to be his Deputy Chief — and not only giving me the chance to succeed but, more importantly, helping me to succeed.
“Mostly, I would like to thank all the officers I have worked with over the past 26 years.
“I began my career with the township in 1988, joining a police department which bears little resemblance to the department of today. That department was one in which officers were driven by quotas and strict enforcement of the law.
“We’ve come a long way since those days. Today, we are a full-service police department, working with our diverse community to improve their quality of life. Whether our officers are conducting a child safety seat inspection, conducting an Emergency Preparedness Seminar or enforcing the law, they are committed to providing these services with honor, integrity and respect.
“To be appointed Chief of these men and woman is truly an honor and a privilege. I have confidence in this community and in its police officers.
“Together, we can achieve great things.”
