Latino legend Miguel Perez shows dying newspapers how it’s Really done

North Jersey’s Latino community easily recognizes Miguel Perez as a radio, TV and newspaper correspondent with the looks, style and swagger of a celebrity. They’ll be happy to know that he is now the new chairman of the Journalism, Communication and Theatre Department at Lehman College.

A new Multimedia Journalism (MMJ) major at Lehman “is designed to prepare our students to meet the challenges faced by 21st-century media professionals.”

The timing of the new program not only fits the changing media landscape but also benefits from the college’s new, state-of-the-art $16 million Multimedia Center.

All MMJ majors will require 42 credits and specialize in one of three tracks: print, broadcast, or multilingual. However, all three tracks will focus heavily on the multimedia elements required of today’s journalists. The multilingual track incorporates what previously was a stand-alone major, multilingual journalism.

“Journalists have to know how to write stories, edit video, and be comfortable on- and behind-the-camera,” said Perez, a long-time newsman, radio host and frequent CNN contributor. “Now with our new Multimedia Center, Lehman students have all the tools of their trade at their disposal.”

Students will get hands-on training writing and designing The Bronx Journal, an online newspaper that serves the entire borough, edited by new Professors Elaine Rivera and Chris McKenna and entirely created by Lehman students.

CHECK OUT MIGUEL’S LATEST COLUMN: Whenever fellow Americans tell me, ”  I just came back from Cuba”   or ”  I’m planning a vacation in Cuba soon,”   they obviously think they are paying me some kind of compliment. Because I was born on that precious Caribbean island, they think such statements would lead to some sort of bonding. They don’t know it makes me lose respect for them. CONTINUED….

Journalism majors will also write, edit, direct, and create The Bronx Journal television show, hosted by Professor Perez and his students, that airs throughout the borough on BronxNet, the municipal cable-access station located on the Lehman campus. The show also airs on YouTube.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The kids are lucky: Having worked closely with Miguel day in and day out, I can say the multimedia students at Lehman have a warm, classy, and extremely bright mentor at the ready to help them.
