Irony: Englewood Cliffs Mom, 81, Whose Son Died In Crash Struck, Killed

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. -- In a tragic irony, an 81-year-old Englewood Cliffs woman whose son was struck and killed by a bus several years ago was killed herself while crossing Route 9W just after midnight Saturday during heavy rain.

A 30-year-old Tenafly woman struck her with her sedan around 12:30 a.m., Police Chief Michael said.

The victim "was returning from a store she owns in the city, the way she does every night," Cioffi told Daily Voice. "She got off the transit bus carrying her bags, walked two blocks up and crossed near Sherwood (Avenue) by the TD Bank."

The spot has no traffic light or crosswalk, Cioffi said, adding that she likely crossed there out of habit.

"The driver said she always takes the same bus," he said. "She was a hard-working woman.

"The poor driver was totally distraught. It was just a bad night with all the rain. It just happened, she said."

Emergency workers desperately tried to revive the injured woman, who was later pronounced dead at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.

An investigation was being completed, although nothing appeared suspicious and no summonses were issued, Cioffi said.
