FAIR LAWN, N.J. — A man accused of breaking into Mavis Discount Tire early Thursday morning in Fair Lawn took the cash register but left his wallet on the floor, which ultimately led police to his arrest, police said.

Raul Soto, 41 of Paterson, a former employee at Mavis, was arrested on burglary, theft and other drug-related charges, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.

At 1:07 a.m., Officer Juan Rodriguez responded to Mavis Discount Tire on River Road on a reported burglary alarm, he said.

Upon arrival, the officer found a broken window on the rear and side of the building and discovered that the cash register, containing $300, had been removed from the business, Metzler said.

During the investigation, a wallet, belonging Soto was discovered on the floor inside the business, according to police.

At 5:37 a.m., Officers John Rovetto and Javier Gutierrez responded to the parking lot of the Empress Diner on a suspicious vehicle, Metzler said.

The operator, Dana Wylam, age 36 of Brick, and the passenger, Soto, were arrested when drugs were located inside the vehicle and on their person, according to police. Soto was identified as the burglar, thanks to his found wallet. They had returned to the area of the burglary in an attempt to locate the lost wallet, Metzler said.

Soto was released after being charged with theft, burglary, possession of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS), possession of drug paraphernalia & possession of hypodermic needles. Wylam was released after being charged with possession of CDS, possession of drug paraphernalia & possession of hypodermic needles.
