Richard A. Chambers, 31, sped off after Officers Joseph Doyle and Christopher Colon tried stopping his 1997 Honda Civic for double parking in front of the McDonalds on downtown West Palisade Avenue around 9 p.m., Detective Capt. Timothy Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon.
Chambers lost control of the car, which crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed into a grassy berm on the front yard of a home at Liberty Road and Belmont Street, Torell said.
“Chambers jumped from the vehicle and was arrested after a foot pursuit through backyards in the area,” the captain said.
Neither he nor the officers was injured, he said.
The Honda, meanwhile, “sustained heavy undercarriage damage and was towed from the scene,” Torell said.
Chambers was being held on $57,500 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with fleeing and eluding creating a risk of death or injury to another and resisting arrest. Records show he also was wanted by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for owing $430 in child support.
Englewood police also issued him summonses for reckless driving, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle with fictitious license plates and having open alcohol.
