Officers Ryan Maloney and Officer Ernie Gonzalez stopped a car driven by 46-year-old Donell Horne on Main Avenue and Chester Street around 5:40 p.m. Wednesday, Detective Lt. Robert Bracken said.

Horne, of East Orange, was talking with them when he and his passenger suddenly bolted, Bracken said.

The officers chased Horne, but they lost sight of him, the lieutenant said.

Several Clifton police units -- along with a Paterson Police K-9 team and Passaic County sheriff's officers -- helped set up a perimeter and search the neighborhood.

Sometime later, Officer Jamie Kincherlow found Horney, who'd fallen off a roof and onto a retaining wall in the 1400 block of Main Avenue.

Horne tried to run again, but Kincherlow quickly caught up to him, Bracken said.

He "continued to physically resist the officer's attempt at placing him under arrest for a considerable amount of time -- even as backup officers arrived to assist," the sergeant said.

They eventually subdued Horne and got him into custody, he said.

The passenger vanished, Bracken said.

Police charged Horne with resisting arrest and criminal mischief. They sent him to the Passaic County Jail to await a bail hearing after finding warrants out of Passaic and Essex counties.

Bracken thanked Paterson police and the county sheriff's officers for their assistance.
