TEANECK, N.J. -- While media attention in Teaneck on Christmas night focused on a pedestrian killed by a hit-and-run driver, members of the township Volunteer Ambulance Corps were engaged in two other serious calls, as well -- one of them fatal.

A crew responding to a 6:22 p.m. call of a 33-year-old man having seizures in a home on Larch Avenue found him in cardiac arrest four minutes later, with a family member conducting CPR, said Larry Robertson, the TVAC public information officer.

Crew members continued CPR until hospital personnel arrived and pronounced him dead, Robertson said.

At 6:35 p.m., another crew went to a Chadwick Road home where an 84-year-old man had "passed out, awakened and was suffering difficulty breathing," he said.

The victim was taken to Holy Name Medical Center.

Then, at 6:51 p.m., came the call of the man struck by the hit-and-run driver of a large, black SUV on Cedar Lane at Garrison Avenue, a little over a block from his home.

"This intense scene was attended by five TVAC member and a Teaneck Fire Dept. company," Robertson said.

Steven J. Leitgeb, 59, was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he died.

The concurrent calls "were attended to by 12 TVAC members," Robertson said.

There was also a five-victim car crash at Liberty Road and Ivy Lane and a mutual aid call to assist Bergenfield's ambulance corps at another multi-victim crash at New Bridge Road and Prospect Avenue, he said.

Authorities were still seeking the public's help finding the driver of the SUV that struck Leitgeb and kept going east on Cedar Lane.

"The vehicle may have damage to the front passenger bumper, hood and windshield," Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.

He asked that anyone with information that can help the investigation call his Fatal Accident Investigation Unit at (201) 226-5500 or Teaneck police at (201) 837-2600 .

Anyone that wishes to remain anonymous but has valuable information can call the BCPO Tips Line: (201) 226-5532 .
