John Kourgelis, 84, Former Owner Teaneck's Cedar Lane Grille

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- John Kourgelis, of Hackensack, died on Saturday, Jan. 7. He was 84.

He was a man that enjoyed the simple moments in life. 

He was the former owner of the Cedar Lane Grille in Teaneck, with his brother Tommy and his first cousin George Mereos (deceased). He was so loved by so many individuals that had worked for him over the course of many years. 

In his years of retirement, his daily trips to the Venetian in Garfield to visit with his sons and family members brought him great pleasure. He enjoyed his annual trips to his native island Chios, Greece and his village Agios Georgios Sikousis.

He is survived by his wife, Kiki; children, Michael and daughter-in-law Margaret Kourgelis, and Jimmy and daughter-in-law Kristina Kourgelis; grandchildren, Johnny, James, Christian, Angelina, Angeliki, and Yianni; brothers, Tommy and George Kourgelis. 

He was predeceased by his parents Marouso and Dimitrios Kourgelis; and his sister, Despina and Nikolaos Nyktas. 

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church, 51 Paramus Rd, Paramus. A funeral service is planned for Wednesday, Jan. 11, 11 a.m. at St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church. Interment immediately following at Valleau Cemetery 546 Franklin Turnpike, Ridgewood.
