"I'm very humbled to receive this award," Davis wrote in an email. "But more importantly, it's a great opportunity to thank my volunteers and supporters over the past 10 years who have gathered here to share our accomplishments.

"I hope this recognition will shed a spotlight on an area of great suffering and urgent need of attention," wrote Davis, a personal injury attorney with Davis, Saperstein & Salomon.

The event will benefit the Dominican Republic / Haiti Burn Care Network, a project under Davis' Burn Advocacy Network, which has its headquarters in Teaneck.

"The children who suffer burns from a portable cooker are known as the rechaud children," said Teaneck Rotary president Tamarha Ellerbe.

"I thought that was a perfect match to work with him and give him this award, and that is one of our areas of focus -- health," she said. "They are determined to make it work."

Burn Advocates Network aims to establish 10 burn camps in 10 different and impoverished countries by 2020.

The rotary expects more than 200 attendees at the gala as ticket sales continued.
