TEANECK, N.J. — Teaneck retiree Dee Ann Ipp has received a Certificate of Appreciation from Councilman Henry Pruitt for her work to preserve the borough's Enslaved African and Lenape Indian Burial Ground.
Ipp rediscovered the burial ground in 2004 and worked to form a coalition to have the town purchase the property and restore it over the last 12 years.
The area is now designated as a historic site by the borough.
"It feels wonderful to be recognized for my efforts," said Ipp, who has lived in Teaneck since 1960. "If I hadn't done anything, the property easily could have wound up getting sold for development.
"I look forward to this land being around for a long time and educating people about the history of Teaneck."
