Rand, a Teaneck local, will be speaking at the Teaneck Library, 840 Teaneck Road, Teaneck, about his newly published romantic thrillers “Honey Trap” and “Blindsided" on Friday, Oct. 23 at 10:30 a.m.
He will also talk about his journey to becoming an author.
He always had a passion for writing but was encouraged to follow other paths in life.
“I always wanted to write, but my father said, in the 50s, you need to be a businessman,” Rand said.
He followed his father’s instructions and pursued a career as a destroyer officer on the USS Wadleigh. He then took a management consulting position and then public relations before retiring at 66 years old in 2004.
It wasn’t until Rand turned 69 that he returned to follow his passion in writing. He submitted his first novel “Say Goodbye” and won the Deadly Ink Press 2007 David G. Sasher, Sr. Best Unpublished Thriller Novel Award.
He was then signed and published in 2008 with a contract to write four more books. The last one was published in 2010. The publisher then suspended operation.
“At age 72, with no publisher it was not easy,” Rand said. “I wouldn’t self publish so I wrote for myself and groups for five years. Trying to get better and better and better and I did.”
Ran submitted “Honey Trap” and was offered a contract by Amber Quill Press. He also published “Blindsided” and is contracted to write a sequel to “Honey Trap” — which is already in the works.
“At age 77 I had two major novels published,” Rand said. “I am old enough to say, that if I can do it anyone can do it.”
