NPR Features 12-Year-Old Hackensack Cellist 'Among Best In U.S.'

HACKENSACK, N.J. — A 12-year-old cellist from Hackensack will be on an upcoming episode of a hit NPRO radio program featuring America's best young classical musicians.

Ian Maloney will be on the April 24 and 29 episodes of "From The Top" on WQXR 105.9 FM, hosted by acclaimed pianist Christopher O’Riley at 6 a.m.

The episode was taped before a live audience at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall in Boston on March 12.

Ian is in the seventh grade at the Elisabeth Morrow School in Hackensack and is a cello student of Madeleine Golz. 

He studies piano and trumpet at both the Manhattan School of Music and the Thurnauer School of Music. 

Ian’s favorite musical experiences include when he lost his first tooth during a cello lesson and when he won his first concerto competition at the age of 8. 

Outside of music, Ian enjoys baseball statistics, reading and cars. He was also recently featured in a YouTube cover of Twenty-One Pilots “Stressed Out” produced by From the Top with Project Trio.
