The ballerina was born Aug. 23, 1942 and turns 73 on Tuesday.
McBride danced with the New York City Ballet for almost 30 years was the youngest principal ballerina in George Balanchine’s famed company.
Balanchine created numerous roles specifically for her, as did Jerome Robbins.
Her husband Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux was also a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. They have two children and live in Charlotte, where they continue to influence the ballet community through teaching, choreography and direction.
McBride was honored in 2014 by the Kennedy Center for artistic dedication in her field.
