TEANECK, N.J. — Kosher Chinese restaurant Chopstix was named Business of the Year by the Teaneck Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s a real honor and we certainly appreciate it,” said Chopstix co-owner and Deputy Mayor of Teaneck Elie Katz.

Chopstix will be honored with the title at the 14th annual Community Awards Dinner hosted by Teaneck Chamber of Commerce’s awards dinner on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Teaneck Marriott at Glenpointe.

Katz, a Teaneck native, opened Chopstix with Uri Herzog and Chef Peter on Jan. 22, 1996. The takeout restaurant serves the Bergen County area and beyond — way beyond.

“In addition to Chopstix popularity locally, we get people calling from all over the country for us to ship them our frozen meals,” Katz said.

A lot of the orders come from locals who have dined at the eatery before moving away and still crave their specialites.

“General Tso is by far is the most popular,” Katz said.

Chopstix delivers to all over the country including Atlanta, Florida and Kentucky.

The Chinese restaurant also caters at events ranging from 10 to 1,000 people.

“We cater for business parties, house parties, bar mitzvahs, weddings, wakes,” Katz said. “Any opportunity to give people quality, good food we will do it.”

Chopstix’s popularity can be linked to its unique offering of kosher Chinese food. The eatery doesn’t use any pork or shrimp.

“We have a growing Jewish community and thought it would be something good,” Katz said.

Almost 20 years in business, Katz and his partners are proud of what they have built.

“The secret to our success, is we give very large portions and try to keep the prices reasonable,” Katz said. “We try to give great service, between delivery and catering. We are also very active with the community. That’s probably the real secret to success.”
